Afterward, check the water meter and shutoff valves by turning off every faucet and check whether the meter is still running. If the meter is still running, then there is a leak. Step by Step Guide On How to Install any type of Sinks.

Installing a kitchen sink as well as the kitchen faucet, pipes and traps is a process that can also be applied to other sink installations, such as a bathroom sink or a deep sink in a utility room. The steps presented here can be utilized in new home construction as well as in homes where a sink and/or faucet set-up and associated plumbing needs to be replaced.

Tools and Materials Needed for Installing a Sink and Faucet:

  1. Crows Foot Extension Wrench (tool for tap supply line fittings)
  2. Screwdriver
  3. Small Adjustable Wrench
  4. Combination Pliers
  5. Plumber’s Putty
  6. Teflon Tape
  7. Eye Protection (advised when working under counter-tops)

Steps and Tips for Installing a Sink and Faucet:

These steps are based on the assumption that the counter-top has been cut to template specifications and that owner chosen and adequately sized drain pipe has been procured.

Step 1:

Take plumber’s putty and roll it to form a bead which will be placed around the perimeter of the cut out portion of the counter-top. Roll putty to approximately ¼” in diameter and apply.

Step 2:

Sink drain cups should be installed as well as a water faucet. Performing these steps before the sink is placed in the counter-top gives you added leverage and convenience, not to mention saving a lot of time.

Tip:

It is a good idea to apply Teflon tape around the sprayer hose fitting if your unit includes this feature.

Step 3:

With putty rolled and in place, set sink onto counter-top ensuring that putty is well secured between counter-top and sink flange. This is an important step as it effectively prevents leakage from moisture that gathers from time to time on counter-tops.

Step 4:

With sink in place, depress outer flanges firmly with hands to compress plumber’s putty. Do not raise sink from this position once you have done this. The complete reapplication of plumber’s putty will be necessary if sink is lifted from its settled position.

Step 5:

From underside of sink, begin to firm flange clamps. From where you begin, use your screwdriver to tighten one clamp with a gentle firmness. Having done this, do the same with a clamp 180 degrees from where you began following along with the others in a likewise sequence. When all of the clamps are snug, go back and repeat the rotation pattern being careful not to over-tighten as this may cause a bowing effect in sink flange. (A sink flange properly sealed to the counter-top can be seen in photo.)

Step 6:

With steps 1-5 completed, water supply lines should be connected next. By attaching the supply lines first, the drain pipes will not obstruct your work. A crow’s foot style wrench works very well on water supply line connections, especially if the connectors are between sink tub depression and the inner wall of the counter. Apply Teflon tape to the male water supply fittings for added leak prevention.

Tip:

Your water supply line fittings and seals can be leak checked prior to drains being attached by using a pot or a bucket to catch water from tap spout during this test.

Step 7:

If PVC drain piping is used, an effective pipe cleaner should be utilized on ends that require firm fitting joints. If metal drain piping is used instead, this step will not be necessary.

Step 8:

Next, you will attach drain piping to drain cups making certain that the appropriate seals and gaskets have been installed. Typically drain cups will use a flat round gasket (usually provided) and placed between the drain cup flange and the sink – see step 2. Compression type seals will be used on drain pipes.

Step 9:

Having completed step 8, the sink trap can now be installed and connected to the outgoing drain piping. If possible, it is a good idea to install a sink trap with a clean out plug located on the lower portion of trap piping. This can save a great deal of time and grief if the trap were to be clogged with foreign objects or hair.

Tip:

The best way to leak check the drain cups, drain piping and the trap assembly is to fill each sink tub with water at least halfway and then release this tub water into drain cups. Then visually inspect (with good lighting) all pipe connections, the areas surrounding drain cups and the trap connections.

Tip:

With the tap shut off, leak check water supply line connections to include sprayer hose connection should tap be outfitted with this accessory.

Following the steps and tips outlined above will ensure success in your sink installation or replacement project.

Remember, always work safely.
